Grandma's Applesauce

4 C. pared, chopped apples
1 C. sugar

¼ C. orange juice
½ tsp. cinnamon

1 small dollop butter
¼ tsp. ground nutmeg

As you pare and chop the apples into pieces, put them in a 2 quart sauce panand sprinkle with the orange juice to keep them from turning brown. Add the sugar, taking into account the tartness of the apples, and adjusting theamount of sugar to taste. Add cinnamon and nutmeg, mixing with large spoon to coat the apple pieces well. Cook gently over a medium heat, stirring frequentlyto keep from sticking. When tender, remove from heat and mash with fork orpotato masher to desired consistency. Taste for sweetness and add more sugarif desired. To give extra richness to the flavor, add a small dollop of butter and stir completely until completely melted and thoroughly incorporated into thesauce.
